The actor and his lawyer wife will educate 3,000 children in Lebanon with their generous donation.

She’s long been a passionate advocate for human rights, so Amal Clooney’s latest endeavour should come as no surprise.

The Lebanon-born lawyer (and new mum) has announced she and her husband, Hollywood actor George Clooney, will help seven schools in her home country to educate refugees.

The couple’s $US2.5 million (Dhs9.18 million) donation will benefit around 3,000 Syrian children, the couple revealed in a statement this week.

The pair’s non-profit, the Clooney Foundation for Justice, has teamed up with Google, Unicef and HP for the philanthropic mission, along with the Lebanese ministry of education.

“Our goal with this initiative is to help provide Syrian refugee children with an education and put them on a path to be the future leaders their generation desperately needs,” the Clooneys said.

“We don’t want to lose an entire generation because they had the bad luck of being born in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The couple established their foundation – which aims to fight for equality in courtrooms, communities, and classrooms – last year.

According to Unicef, around 200,000 Syrian refugee children living in Lebanon are not enrolled in schools, after fleeing their war-stricken home country in recent years.

In fact, the Clooneys’ foundation website states, Lebanon is currently home to more than 1 million Syrian refugees – around 25 per cent of the Arab nation’s total population.

“Many public schools in Lebanon have opened their doors to Syrian refugees, but more need to do so,” the couple said, adding that their donation will support seven existing schools to take in refugees.

The funds will help provide supplies, transportation, computers and teacher training.

Humanitarian initiatives aside, it’s been a busy few months for the A-list couple, who welcomed their first children in June.

The Clooneys’ twins – named Ella and Alexander – were born in London’s Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, turning the family of two into a family of four.

The couple, who wed in 2014 in Venice, are typically private about their personal lives, though George did open up about Amal’s pregnancy earlier this year.

“It’s exciting and we’re really happy and really excited,” the 56-year-old told French TV show Rencontres de Cinema“It’s going to be an adventure. We’ve sort of embraced it all… with arms wide open.”
